Tech Data Awards Banquet for 2008

Mar. 7th, 2009 | 01:59 pm
mood: grateful grateful

I attend the Tech Data Awards Banquet last evening. I do not usually go to these sort of events because of physical limitations that I have due to back injuries, but this year I was told by my management that "it was in my best interest to attend." The deal was sealed when the vice president of the company that oversees our department asked me if I was going to attend and went on to ask if I had a suit as this was a business dress event. I did not know why such interest was being given to my attendance, but I figured that it would definitely behoove me to be there. They gave some of the usual bs awards that you always see at these sort of things, ie most entertaining, mr and mrs congeniality, etc before bringing out the dinner entrees. I had a rare steak, which was very good.

After dinner the main awards of the Evening were presented. Technical services, which is the the division which I am part of, went first. The third award in the Technical Services was for PreSales Technician of the Year and when my name was called I was elated. I was not expecting to receive this award and am honored that Management of my department appreciates my efforts to reward me in this fashion.

All in all a great evening.

Change has come

Jan. 20th, 2009 | 02:43 pm

Today is a great day in the history of our Country. Although I was unable to watch President Obama's speech at work, I was able to read the text of the speech on CNN. The expectations for his speech were extremely high, but I believed that he surpassed those expectations. He also clearly stated that the failed policies of the past were no longer the rule starting today. I especially like it when he said we will "restore science to its rightful place." He appealed to the best in all of us and affirmed that, although the challenges that we face are daunting, we will meet those challenges.

The first 100days of an administration have been a yardstick in measuring a President's effectiveness since the first term of FDR. I can't wait to see what this President can accomplish in that period. My faith in our Nation (or at least our government's policies) has been restored....Now it just remains to be seen if its resuscitation was justified.

Apologies

mood: disappointed disappointed

I feel that I must offer an explanation and an apology to [info]lil_red_witch . I promised to attend her get together and was unable to make it. I am not the sort that makes a promise and does not follow thru on it, and for that I am sorry. There were, however, extenuating circumstances. The details of the circumstances can be a little graphic, so in consideration for the squeamish, I am placing them behind the Cut )</div>Cut )

I want to thank everyone that came out to Karaoke last night and wished me a happy birthday in person. I especially want to thank [info]leilamae  who made some absolutely delicious brownies.... [info]dayity said that she only used half the hash as last time...I think he was lying because the only rush I got was from the sugar, oh well, they more then made up for it with the great taste.

Tonight's debate

Oct. 8th, 2008 | 01:49 am
mood: contemplative contemplative

Now it will not come as any surprise to anyone that has read my LJ, that I am an avowed Democrat. That being said, I also have a degree in Political Science and try to somewhat unbiased in my analysis of these events.

I do wish that the participants would have given more specifics and less rhetoric. I did not hear anything new from either opponent. I believe that Sen. Obama won the debate for the following reasons

Body Language: Sen Obama seemed to be extremely comfortable through out the debate. Sen. McCain seemed stiff to me...his hand was tightly clenched the entire time...and less open from his posture. He did have one high point when he connected with the Retired Navy Chief in the audience. Other than that occasion he seemed to me to be somewhat distant

Verbiage: Although Sen. Obama stumbled verbally on a few occasions....his repetitive use of "and" and some verbal misspeaks, I thought his tone was more approachable and personable than McCain's. McCain tried to use humor on several occasions, which does not work when the audience must remain silent. I also thought that McCain made a serious error when he said "that one" when referring to Obama. It sounded petty and very condescending to me.

Specifics: While I thought that there weren't enough specifics, I thought Obama did a better of job of presenting his vision. McCain was also short on specifics. I do wish that he had said more regarding his  suggestion for buying up default mortgages.  I am quite sure the Republican faithful went into collective apoplexy when he said that.

Tonight's Agenda

I won't be going to Karaoke tonight. I'm going to stay home and watch the debate. There are couple of reasons for this. 1. I am a politics geek with a degree in Polisci and 2. I just have to watch what promises to be the funniest two hours on television since the Carol Burnett show went off the air. I do apologize to any Republican friends that may read this, but I envision myself ROFLMAO at each attempt by the Republican VP joke makes to answer a question. Unless she has someone's hand stuck up her ass making her lips move, this promises to be the funniest disaster movie since the original Airplane.

irritation

Sep. 19th, 2008 | 02:32 pm

There is nothing on this planet that irritates me more than when people spew forth unsubstantiated rumor in an attempt to vilify a candidate. A word of general advice to the masses that may read this. If you get something in an email that slams either candidate take a side trip up to www.factcheck.org or www.snopes.com and check the veracity of the claim. In all probability that juicy bit of gossip that made its way to your inbox is nothing more a load of stinking horse shit!

This was not directed at anyone on LJ, more of an attempt to vent because of something a co-worker railed about at work.

JR at My Place

Sep. 10th, 2008 | 04:43 pm
mood: cheerful cheerful

JR is moving his show to MY Place (The former Toucan's). I had a long discussion with JR and confirmed this last Saturday.  He asked that I help to get the word out for him, but not to post anything until after Tuesday (which is when he was going to break the news to Beer Belly's) He hopes to see everyone there at his new (old) digs.

Karaoke

Sep. 6th, 2008 | 12:45 am
mood: cheerful cheerful

I got some new disc to add to the collection.

The first one is 20hits from the Film Grease. This includes the Grease Megamix and it even has the song by Rizzo 'There Are Worst Things I Could Do" (that was always one of my favorites from the film). Speaking of Grease has anybody ever really listened to the words for "Greased Lightning"? If you have you know that is one really raunchy song.

Next up is the complete Broadway fully ochestrated "HairSpray". This 2 disc set just came out and it has all the songs from the broadway musical. (It doesn't have the two extra songs that they used in the movie though). Like my "Wicked" it has one disc complete with vocals and one disc that is only accompaniment with on screen lyrics.

Now the place where I buy my discs has a frequent buyer program. When you buy a disc you get a hole punched into this card that they give you. Fill up the card and you get a free disc. The purchase of the Hairspray set finally filled up my card and I was able to get one more disc for the collection. This time I got a disc called Silly Songs which has some old Dr. Demento favorites like "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, The Purple People Eater, The Streak, They're Coming To Take Me Away" and quite a few others.

I will be going to Myplace on Saturday with all my discs. I would love to see whoever can make it out

I work as a phone based presales advisory technician for Tech Data (A distributor of computer parts and peripherals) I just got a call and had to share the person's last name

Himelfarb

Now those of you who are familiar with the Musical Rent probably got the significance of the name right off. For those not familiar, one of the main characters states that he learned how to dance the Tango with Nannette Himelfarb, the Rabbi's daughter, at the Scarsdale Jewish Community Center. I never would have believed that I would speak to someone with that name...ever.

What's new

Aug. 27th, 2008 | 08:11 pm

One of my favorite things in the world, as many know, is karaoke.  This week I am adding two discs to my collection. One disc is an all inclusive rendering of the songs from Grease (the movie version). I am also getting a brand new disc set that has all the songs from the Musical Hairspray (stage version, not the movie...oh well ya can't have everything)

I am also a huge fan of animation. I turned in my Disney Rewards Points (points awarded for buying Disney DVD's) and got two Disney animation films. The first one is Duck Tales the Movie. The second is quite obscure, but it was what  made me decide to spend my points on this particular offer. The second movie is called Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land. I can remember seeing this when I was elementary school 35yrs ago. I can't wait to watch it.

Happenings

May. 27th, 2008 | 01:51 pm
mood: cheerful cheerful

Well folks, it's official, the Pagan Bus, or as [info]firerose called it the two eyed, one horn, purple pagan people mover,  has been retired.  The van had reached 98 thousand miles and various little things were starting to happen, so I figured I better get it replaced before something major happened. I went and got a new to me car on Friday. I still have enough room in the new vehicle to carry up to 4 people and their luggage, so there is no change on the FPG front.
The new car is a white 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, sort of a glorified station wagon on steriods,  with leather interior, dvd player and wood grain molding....The car only had 5930 miles on it and I was able to get a 60month 75,000 mile warranty for it. On the down side, it has fewer places to put stuff, within easy reach of the driver,  so I will have to forgo having the garbage can in the vehicle and finding a place to put my mega tea jug is proving somewhat problematic. It is also strange having to relearn where a Park, Reverse, Shift lever is after many years of having it on the stering column, the new one is between the front seats.

I will be driving it up to Karaoke at BB's on Thursday if anyone wants to take a gander.

An Irritation

May. 12th, 2008 | 11:51 pm
mood: pissed off pissed off

This is a short rant about something that is really starting to bother me. If it doesn't apply to you, please forgive me for this intrusion into your normal LJ faire.

This rant goes to all the people that I've left messages on their phones that never call me back. I am not a solicitor nor am I a debt collector.  I don't usually just call someone to shoot the breeze. There is often a very good reason why I took to the time to call and leave a message. The people that I am refering to claim to be my friend. If it was your intention to show just how much you value my friendship by making me feel like I am absolutely worthless, then congradulations, message received.  I can understand ocassionally not calling back....life sometimes get hectic, but when someone that says they are a friend to my face repeatedly does not return my calls, I  have to question whether they really were ever my friend at all. To those to whom this applicable, rest assurred that it will be the absolutely coldest day in Hell before I ever call you again. If and when you think I am worthy enough to speak to you, please feel free to call me, I'm sure that you have my number. If you don't remember it, check your messages...it is there several times...leave a message, I might call you back.

An Overbooked weekend

Apr. 25th, 2008 | 02:55 pm
mood: cheerful cheerful

I have so very much to do this weekend...none of it bad mind you, just very busy

1. Leave work this evening for GSG Grande Beltaine Sabbat where I am hosting their open mic feature for the evening. I loaded the Karaoke equipment into the Pagan Bus and compiled new songs books and requests slips last night, so every thing is ready. I just have to get down to the park in a somewhat timely manner

2. My daughter,

[info]tadakimacun and her fiancee are arriving from New York at 11:55pm this evening. This will be my first chance to meet the future husband of my daughter and I'm looking forward to getting to know him

3. Saturday take my daughter to her seamtress to get her fitted for her handfasting gown and go over the hand fasting script with the local participants.

4. Run GSG benefit auction with my daughter acting as my Vanna White on Saturday evening...She wanted me to introduce the hubby to be to the Castle, but I don't know if we will be able to work that in or not

5. On Sunday pick up storage bins from [info]faeryrayne for transportation to FPG on Tuesday.

When not running around like a chicken with his head cut off, I will be spending time with my daughter, getting to know the the future hubby and playing the new Wii system that I was finally able to acquire...like I said, busy but very kewl.

OMFG What a piece of Shite

Apr. 1st, 2008 | 12:39 am
location: Other Computer
mood: enraged enraged

Let me start by saying that I bought a 1400 dollar dell pc on credit (why, because I could not afford one any other way) I do everything that you are supposed to do (ie I had it on a surge protoected UPS, made sure that there was adequate ventilation around it etc. ) Yesterday I powered the machine down and when I tried to turn it back on, their little power button flashes amber at me. The machine does not power on and now I find out that since it is out of warranty it is effectively a 1400 dollar door stop.. They are fucking high if they think that they are ever going to see another penny from me as long as I live. I refuse to pay for something defective which I only found out about after the warranty expired, because I left the machine powered on. I feel like just another victim of a corporate perpetuated fraud.

A Little Vocabulary is a Dangerous Thing

Mar. 17th, 2008 | 10:02 pm
mood: amused amused

A friend sent this to me via email. Apparently it has been around for quite some time, but as I've been a user of dice and rpg books since the 70's I found it to be hysterically funny. So here it is, offered as  a homage to late Gary Gygax.

The Tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo
by Richard Aronson [aronson@sierratel.com]

In the early seventies, Ed Whitchurch ran "his game", and one of the participants was Eric Sorenson. Eric plays something like a computer. When he games, he methodically considers each possibility before choosing his preferred option. If given time, he will invariably pick the optimal solution. It has been known to take weeks. He is otherwise, in all respects, a superior gamer. Eric was playing a Neutral Paladin in Ed's game. He was on some lord's lands when the following exchange occurred:

ED: You see a well groomed garden. In the middle, on a small hill, you see a gazebo.
ERIC: A gazebo? What color is it?
ED: [pause] It's white, Eric.
ERIC: How far away is it?
ED: About 50 yards.
ERIC: How big is it?
ED: [pause] It's about 30 ft across, 15 ft high, with a pointed top.
ERIC: I use my sword to detect good on it.
ED: It's not good, Eric. It's a gazebo.
ERIC: [pause] I call out to it.
ED: It won't answer. It's a gazebo.
ERIC: [pause] I sheathe my sword and draw my bow and arrows. Does it respond in any way?
ED: No, Eric, it's a gazebo!
ERIC: I shoot it with my bow. [roll to hit] What happened?
ED: There is now a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it.
ERIC: [pause] Wasn't it wounded?
ED: OF COURSE NOT, ERIC! IT'S A GAZEBO!
ERIC: [whimper] But that was a +3 arrow!
ED: It's a gazebo, Eric, a GAZEBO! If you really want to try to destroy it, you could try to chop it with an axe, I suppose, or you could try to burn it, but I don't know why anybody would even try. It's a @#$%!! gazebo!
ERIC: [long pause. He has no axe or fire spells.] I run away.
ED: [thoroughly frustrated] It's too late. You've awakened the gazebo. It catches you and eats you.
ERIC: [reaching for his dice] Maybe I'll roll up a fire-using mage so I can avenge my Paladin.

At this point, the increasingly amused fellow party members restored a modicum of order by explaining to Eric what a gazebo is. Thus ends the tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo. It could have been worse; at least the gazebo wasn't on a grassy gnoll. Thus ends the tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo. A little vocabulary is a dangerous thing.

Intelligent (not) Design

Mar. 5th, 2008 | 03:23 pm
mood: annoyed annoyed

I posted this on a friend's LJ and thought I would post it here as well.

First some background information. In 2007 the State Board of Education for the State of Florida announced that they were going to revise their science curriculum guidelines after 5 of the Board had publicly stated that they believed in the doctrine of Intelligent Design. This occurred following decisions by Court after Court which had denounced ID as an attempt to teach Christian Beliefs in Public Schools. The School Board, after a massive email campaign from Pastaferians (go Flying Spaghetti Monster!)voted 4-3 to endorse a curriculum emphasizing Evolution and established Science Facts. Along comes State Senator Rhonda Storm who has introduced a bill to the Florida Legislature that she has entitled the "Academic Freedom Act" would allow Teachers "objectively present scientific information relevant to the full range of scientific views regarding chemical and biological evolution." To the well informed this is but another attempt to get ID taught in public schools. If you like you can read more about her proposal here .

I thought for a few minutes to understand why getting this religious doctrine taught in our schools is such a high priority for these people. No matter how many times the courts shoot this down, or how many times clear thinking people tell ID to take a hike, they keep trying to get their misrepresentation of facts and dogma into our public schools. They feel driven to get this presented to all of the youth of America and undermine established scientific research. I think I have figured out the reason why. A lot of the supporters of ID are evangelic Christians. These people when asked will say that they believe that the Bible is the absolute word of God and is completely true. They do not seem to be capable of distinguishing between allegory and fact. If the Bible is completely true and has a completely accurate timeline of events, then evolution cannot be true. Futhermore the idea of life coming into being without the intervention of their God again contradicts their "factual" scripture. Evolution is a wedge that topples their literal interpretation of the Bible.

I say that they need to get over it. Here is an oral tradition that was written down more than 1500 years ago at a time when scientific explanations were not thought of nor possible to explore in any constructive way. The technology was simply not there. Their tennacious adherence to these antiquated beliefs puts these people squarely in the dark ages. I, for one, wish that they would get onto the Renaissance and join the rest of us in the 21st century.

of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong

What can Brown do for Me?

Feb. 27th, 2008 | 11:52 pm
mood: infuriated infuriated

It seems that I owe the hypothetical Scumbag in my last post an apology. After contacting UPS it turns out that their driver, in a grand display of gross incompetence, delivered my daughter's package to the wrong address. The person at said address has spent several days trying to get someone from UPS to pick up the erroneously delivered parcel. It wasn't until today, when my mother, the person who shipped the package in the first place for me, went to UPS to inform them that my daughter had not received her gift that they figured out what happened. A pick up order has been placed and hopefully my daughter will soon have her gift in her hands, albeit a few days late. I never ceased to be amazed by the incredible amounts of abject stupidity that runs rampant in this world of ours.

What can Brown do for me? How about pissing me off and causing me to have to call my daughter and hypothesis that someone had stolen her gift because a non human interaction tracking feature had informed me that the package had been delivered and left on her doorstep. How about causing my daughter to cry because she couldn't understand how someone could be that utterly cruel to another human being. How about having me theorize to her that it was probably some junkie who thought he could pawn the items for enough money to secure his next fix in a vague attempt to conceptualize why this might  happen. How about having everything thing turn out to be huge pile of shit based on some illiterate driver's inability to read a fucking street address.

I do know one thing that Brown will not do for me ever again.....and that's deliver a another fucking package for me.

This goes out to whoever was the asshole that took my daughter's bday present from her front door after UPS dropped it off. I hope that you arrive shortly in an afterlife that is richly deserved for a complete prick such as you. I'm sure that your need of an empty guitar case and tuner must be great indeed that you would take it and ruin my daughter's birthday...if I believed in Hell, I would hope there is a special corner reserved for people like you. I curse you with every fiber of my being.

Thank you all for making last night possible, but a special thanks goes to CJ (I don't if you have an LJ hun) and [info]saintsladyfor all their support.
